On the Spot registration renewal in the Young Subaru service drive in South Ogden, Utah

What Is On the Spot Registration Renewal?

On the Spot is a Utah DMV program that lets approved inspection stations complete registration renewals for their customers. When your renewal is due, we test your vehicle (if it needs an emissions test), send the results to the state, renew the registration, and hand you the new registration and plate decal right away. You skip the DMV line and don't wait for a decal in the mail.

Because it happens in our service drive, it fits into a visit you may already be making. Many drivers renew while we change their oil or rotate their tires.

How to Renew Your Registration On-Site

  1. Book a time or stop in.

Use the online scheduler and note that you'd like a registration renewal, or drive in during service hours.

  2. Check in with a service advisor.

Tell us your registration is due. We look up your vehicle by plate and VIN and see whether an emissions test is required this year.

  3. Emissions test, if needed.

Our certified inspector tests your vehicle, and the result goes to the state electronically.

  4. Renewal and decal.

We process the renewal at the service desk and give you your new registration and plate decal.

  5. Pay and go.

State fees and our station charges are paid together at checkout.

What to Bring

  • The vehicle you're renewing (it has to be here for the emissions test)
  • Your renewal notice or current registration, if you have it handy
  • Proof of current auto insurance
  • A form of payment for state fees, taxes, and station charges
  • Any emissions waiver or out-of-state deferral paperwork that applies to your vehicle

Does My Vehicle Need an Emissions Test in Weber County?

Weber County bases emissions testing on model year. Vehicles less than six years old are tested every other year: even model years in even calendar years, and odd model years in odd calendar years. Vehicles six years and older are tested every year, back to model year 1996. Here is how that works out for 2026 renewals:

Model yearEmissions test for a 2026 renewal
2026 and 2025Not required
2024 and 2022Required
2023 and 2021Not required
2020 to 1996Required
1995 and olderNot required

Fully electric vehicles, like the Subaru Solterra, are exempt. Hybrids are not, so a Subaru Forester Hybrid or Subaru Crosstrek Hybrid follows the same schedule as a gas model. The test can be done up to two months before your renewal. Utah no longer requires a safety inspection to register most passenger vehicles, so for most drivers the emissions test is the only inspection needed.

Hours, Fees, and Location

Registration renewals are handled during service hours, Monday to Saturday from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. We're closed Sunday. You'll find us at 3730 Riverdale Road in South Ogden, just off I-15, serving drivers from Ogden, Riverdale, Roy, and Layton.

Registration fees and taxes are set by the state and depend on your vehicle and where you live. You can estimate them with the Utah DMV's registration fee information. Your service advisor will go over the total, including any emissions test and renewal charges, before we start.

Renew During Your Oil Change or Express Service

The easiest time to renew is during a visit you already need. Subaru Express Service handles oil changes, tire rotations, and minor maintenance without an appointment, and we can take care of your registration at the same time. While you wait, enjoy our cafe, kids' play and family room, and outdoor dog park, or use our complimentary shuttle service to go anywhere within 15 miles of the dealership. If you bought your vehicle here, registration renewal is an excellent time to utilize your Young Auto Care oil changes, tire rotations, and other included services.

We service all makes and models at our South Ogden service center, so the whole household can renew here.

When You'll Still Need the DMV

On the Spot covers renewals for most vehicles. A first-time Utah registration, a title transfer, a vehicle coming from out of state, or a change of plates still goes through a Utah DMV office. If something on your record keeps us from completing a renewal, we'll tell you right away so you know your next step.

Registration Renewal FAQs

Do I need an appointment to renew my registration?

No. You can drive in during service hours, Monday to Saturday from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. If you'd like to keep your visit short, book a time online and mention the renewal, or pair it with a no-appointment Express Service oil change.

Does my car need an emissions test in Weber County?

It depends on the model year. Vehicles less than six years old are tested every other year: even model years in even calendar years, odd in odd. Vehicles six years and older, back to 1996, are tested every year. Fully electric vehicles are exempt, but hybrids are not.

What do I need to bring to renew my registration?

Bring the vehicle, your renewal notice or current registration if you have it, proof of insurance, and a form of payment. If you have an emissions waiver or out-of-state deferral, bring that paperwork too.

Can I renew my registration here if my car isn't a Subaru?

Yes. On the Spot renewal works for most vehicles, whatever the make, and our service center works on all makes and models.

How long does On the Spot renewal take?

The emissions test is quick, and the renewal is processed at our service desk while you wait. When you renew during an oil change or Express Service visit, it usually wraps up within that visit.

How much does it cost to renew my registration?

Utah sets registration fees and taxes based on your vehicle and county. Your total also includes any emissions test and our station renewal charge. Your service advisor will review the total before we begin.

How early can I renew my Utah registration?

An emissions test can be done up to two months before your renewal, and the state accepts renewals ahead of your expiration date. Renewing early in that window gives you time to handle any repairs if a vehicle doesn't pass.

Do I still need a safety inspection in Utah?

For most passenger vehicles, no. Utah dropped the safety inspection requirement for registration in 2018. It still applies to some vehicles, such as rebuilt salvage vehicles and commercial vehicles.
